The group focuses on and performs classic vocal arrangements including those of the New York Voices, Groove For Thought, and the Singers Unlimited. Open to all UM students by audition, the multiple DownBeat award-winning Frost Jazz Vocal Ensemble 1 is made up of vocal and instrumental students from the Studio Music and Jazz program and students from across all degree programs at Frost.

Directed by Dr. Kate Reid, the select Jazz Vocal I has performed for audiences throughout south Florida, several Jazz Educators Network conferences, and the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey, CA where the group received top honors in 2015. Recent guest artists with JV 1 include Sheila Jordan, Peter Eldridge, Jo Lawry, Becca Stevens, Darmon Meader, Kathleen Grace, Cyrille Aimee, Gretchen Parlato, and Karrin Allyson.
