Directed by John Hart, the three performing Jazz Guitar Ensembles (MSJ 169, 170, and 171) at the Frost School of Music usually consist of five electric guitars, bass, and drums. These small groups rehearse regularly.

Students work on a wide variety of contemporary guitar arrangements, written by Frost faculty and peers. Learning benefits include:

  • Experience in reading music of many styles and varying degrees of complexity
  • Developing the ability to blend with the other musicians
These groups play in public and occasionally record.

Jazz Guitar Sightreading Workshop I & II

Another ensemble, Jazz Guitar Sightreading Workshop I & II (MSJ 172-173), is a year-long course in the development of sightreading skills. This group does not perform but concentrates on the development of skills that would be useful in the performing ensembles above.
