The Curriculum

Students in the Masters of Music in Jazz Vocal Performance degree program are serious about developing their understanding and skill in all facets of jazz performance including improvisation, composition, arranging, and vocal technique in solo and ensemble jazz and contemporary styles. This program of study is designed for students possessing a bachelor's degree in jazz studies-jazz voice or jazz vocal performance.  Students who hold an undergraduate degree in a related music area with professional jazz performance experience may also be successful candidates for this program.

Students experience a wide variety of learning environments with our faculty who are established teachers and industry professionals. The MSJV master's program provides our students with opportunities to rehearse and conduct a major performance jazz vocal ensemble and gain an understanding and knowledge of jazz pedagogy.

Our graduates are working in many areas of performance in the music industry as:

  • solo recording artists,
  • session singers,
  • published jazz vocal and choral arrangers,
  • professional vocal ensemble members, and
  • freelance musicians.
Several of our alumni hold prominent faculty positions in several of the leading University jazz vocal and commercial music programs in the country.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Studio Music and Jazz Program at the Frost School of Music!
