The ensemble program in the Studio Music and Jazz Department features four large jazz ensembles. They are comprised of the typical instrumentation: 4-5 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxes, and a rhythm section. Everyone records and performs on a regular basis.

CJB: Frost Concert Jazz Band

The CJB is the flagship ensemble for the Studio Music and Jazz Department and has a long history of excellence. Some of the greatest jazz musicians in recent years have performed and/or written for this legendary band.

SJB: Frost Studio Jazz Band

Frost SJB is the second-tier big band at the Frost School. Its young and talented musicians and diverse repertoire make it one of the finest college big bands performing today.

Frost Latin Jazz Orchestra

The Frost Latin Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dafnis Prieto, features a full big band with Latin percussion and a group of singers. This exciting group explores the Afro-Cuban culture and traditional rhythms and blends them with other influences. Downbeat magazine, perhaps the most read jazz magazine in the world, gave the Frost Latin Jazz Orchestra five "Best Latin Group" awards. Past artists participating in this group’s annual popular spring concert include Mark O'Connor, Shelly Berg, Jonathan Kreisberg, Federico Britos, Brian Lynch, Pete Rodriguez, and many others.

XJB

The XJB is an ensemble that allows the future stars of the Studio Music and Jazz Department to grow and develop. Its director, Chuck Bergeron, holds its students to high standards, knowing that they will move into the top bands when they are ready.
